Students Corner: Education and the GovernmentLink: http://www.ifmc-consultants.com The amount of money that the government allocates to the defense budget is astronomical. The Department of Defense alone takes in almost half of the total amount budgeted to the various departments across the federal government.
But what about education? How much does the government allocate for that? It might shock you, as the amount spent of education is a "whopping" $46.7 billion.
You read that right, less than 10 percent of the amount that is spent on defense is spent on education. Basically, the government is giving the impression that war is more important than our schools. Think about that the next time your state school hikes up tuition.
Also, it doesn't help that the amount of red tape involved in a government defense contract means that the product supplier has no choice but to charge what you might consider an astronomical amount for their product/services simply because of the man hours involved to get it all done. Now, that being said, defense covers not just the war, but homeland security and a whole host of other areas that have been created to protect the people of this nation. And a state of the art technology that is used to better detect whether there is an explosive device is a sight more expensive than the cost of, say, upgrading the computers on campus. By a lot. Think about the level of education you feel you're getting, how much it's costing you to go to school, and the return of services from those fees. Now think about what really goes into making this country a safer place. Do you, as a student, feel that the government should allocate money from the Department of Defense to the Department of Education? Do you think it should come from somewhere else? And, that said, do you feel that, if money were to be taken from defense, should education even be the place it goes, in your mind? Let me know!
