UPS and the Global Supply Chain: Info from a SeminarLink: http://www.ifmc-consultants.com/shop Just this week I went to a seminar put on by Noel Massie of UPS. He is the president of the Southern California Division, having been with the company since 1977. He had some really great insight into the global supply chain and how it is affecting the global economy, as well as some interesting facts about UPS.
...
That being said, and considering this, they actually have more overnights than FedEx does. I find that particularly fascinating considering that Fedex is more known for overnights, while most think of UPS in terms of ground.
While China has 1.8 billion people, their GDP is actually only one-third the size of the United States. The United States 309 million people. In regards to their GDP, you do the math.
Due to the current state of the world and our use of the internet, companies are being forced to go global, whether they want to or not. Even if a business is small, as long as someone is capable to of ordering it in another country, people will.
With that last piece of info, Noel believes that supply chain managers will soon be just as important to a firm as the CEO. If a company must go global – or simply extend its reach – they need to have the proper infrastructure to pull it off, and the supply chain manager is the one capable of doing it.
Just a few tidbits of info for you. To learn a little bit more about Noel, check out some info here, the UPS website here and watch the video below!
